Help bring the world of Almost, Maine to life in this technical theater camp for high schoolers!
Behind the Scenes Camp is a full day Kansas City technical theater summer camp for ages 14-18. This KC metro technical theater camp in Overland Park helps students build technical skills while making new friends!
Behind the Scenes campers will work with the Almost, Maine directing team to take the production from design to the stage. Campers will build and assemble all the technical elements of the show, before transitioning to crew roles for the actual show. During shows, Behind the Scenes campers will serve as running crew, stage management, lighting crew, costumes crew, and more! This camp will give you a unique opportunity to work on the technical aspects of a production from their inception to their execution.
All About Almost, Maine:
Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.
What age should my student be to do Behind the Scenes Camp?
Eligible students range from rising high school freshman (completed eighth grade in 2025-2026) to rising college freshman (completed senior year in 2025-2026). We approximate these ages to be 14-18, however if a student graduates in May of 2026 and is 19 years old, they can participate.
I’m too old for Behind the Scenes Camp, but want to help behind the scenes, how can I be involved?

Do you offer a tech theater camp for students younger than 14?
Yes! Our Xtreme Camps are perfect for students ages 10 and up interested in tech theater.

My student wants to perform on stage, how do they do that?
We offer many camps with opportunities to perform!

Do the kids get to have their cell phone or other technology?
Campers are allowed to bring cell phones to camp, but cell phones are never allowed to be used during rehearsal. Camp staff will always have cell phones in case of emergencies. Failure to abide by this policy may result in the cell phone being confiscated by camp staff.

Who do I contact in case of emergency during camp?
You will be provided a contact cell number of the Show Coordinator in case of emergency.
Do you have to be a Christian to come to First Act?
No. First Act Theatre Arts holds to Christian values of family, community, leadership, and positive encouragement. We welcome all kids of varying faiths, backgrounds, and beliefs.
What if my child has a disability?
First Act Theatre Arts openly welcomes children with disabilities. Further, First Act proudly offers our HEART program (Helping to Encourage Awareness and Recognition in Theatre). Please let us know what we can do to help! Before camp you will want to fill out the HEART application and camp support form. First Act will work with you to assist your child. Please give us as much information as possible so we can make your child’s experience successful.
