Current Classes

The spring semester of our studio classes is coming soon! Registration for Spring 2021 begins on November 1. Classes begin on January 24 and run for 14 weeks. The last day of spring semester classes will be April 28.

Registered students can audition for our winter productions on November 19 and our spring productions on February 25. Click HERE for more information.

Discount Information

*** Our Early Bird will run from November 1 to December 10. Registrations during this period will receive $10 off per class.

*** Discounts for Acting/Vocal Studios are as follows: Multi-class – $10 off per additional class; Sibling – $10 off per additional student

***Discounts for Dance Studio are as follows: 2 dance classes – $40 off total; 3 dance classes – $90 off total; 4 dance classes – $150 off total. The multiple class dance discount is per person; it cannot be used as a sibling discount. You will need to call the First Act office (913-681-3318) for your discount voucher if taking more than one dance class. Note: Because we are offering a larger tiered discount for dance, this discount may not be used alongside the Early Bird Discount. Take the Stage I is the first step to understanding what acting is all about! In this class, we will use theatre games, storytelling and role-playing to stretch your imaginations and discover the endless creativity within yourself!

So you already know the basics and ready for more? Dive a little deeper into the world of acting in Take the Stage II! In this class, you will continue to grow your knowledge on the fundamentals of acting, in a fun, supportive, and creative atmosphere. Learn more about improv, auditioning, storytelling, and more!

Teacher: Will Wright (Missouri), Minnie Beechner (Kansas)

This class will introduce students to a solid foundation for the craft of acting. We will introduce students to technique-based artistry through a series of exercises, introduction to script analysis, sense memory, and monologue work. All exercises are designed to encourage spontaneity, foster teamwork, and build self-confidence.

This class is designed for those who are interested in exploring further into acting technique and finding truth in portrayal of characters. You will learn improv techniques, how to create a truthful and honest scene with partnered scene work, and how to analyze the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of characters through character and script analysis. Through this class, you will become more aware, imaginative, responsive, and truthful onstage.

The First Act Improv class allows students from all experience levels and backgrounds to build skills and ideologies not only applicable to the stage, but to their everyday lives! We will focus on improvising well crafted scenes whether they are comedic or dramatic. The goal is to build confidence in thinking on your feet.

Teacher: Meghan Reeb

Do you love Disney? Do you love singing? Do you want to learn more about performing while having a ton of fun? Then, this class is for you! Our Sing Out! class will give students an opportunity to grow in confidence, memorization skills, and general knowledge of musical theater, all while learning songs like “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” and “Hakuna Matata.” To showcase their progress throughout the semester, the Sing Out! Students will perform at the end of semester vocal recital. Participation in the Sing Out! class will qualify students ages 8 and older to participate in a production.

So you want to learn more about music, but you’re not sure where to start? The Intro to Voice serves as an introductory course for students who are beginning their musical journey, or just looking to learn more! This class will focus on you as a singer, improving your technique and performance skills. It also serves as a prerequisite for our Private Voice Lessons or future, more advanced Vocal Studio Classes. To showcase their progress throughout the semester, the Intro to Voice Students will perform a group number at the end of semester vocal recital.

The First Act Vocal Studio is excited to offer an opportunity for students to take a private voice lesson with one of our highly trained instructors! Each student will take private bi-weekly lessons over a 14 week semester, with a total of 7 hours of private vocal instruction. In addition, these students will meet twice a month at the First Act Studios to have “Studio Hour.” In this time, each student will have the opportunity to perform a lesson piece for the combined studio. After their “Studio Hour” performance, each student will receive feedback and constructive criticism from an instructor other than their normally assigned instructor. This time will allow learning from each other as a group and from multiple instructors. At the end of the semester, each student will perform one of their lesson pieces in a recital. Note: If students are just beginning their musical journey, we highly recommend they take the Intro to Voice class.

Focus will be on strength, stamina, flexibility, and the basic core knowledge needed before advancing into higher levels. Any new dancer must take this class before enrolling in another dance class if they have never taken a dance class before or if it has been a few years since taking a class. This will be the prerequisite for all Level I and beginner classes.

Dancers will learn classical ballet technique in the traditional class format while learning how to apply this technique in all types of dance. Focuses will include proper alignment, turn out, increasing flexibility, developing a proper pointe, muscle control, positions of feet and arms, balance, ballet vocabulary and French terminology.

* Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Dance or at least two sessions of a beginner class.

This is a beginning to intermediate level class that is designed to continue with more complex tap skills and performance value. The focus will be endurance, skill, core, and tap technique. This class will be working on combinations and short dance pieces to enhance performance skills as well as characterization that fits with Musical Theatre tap.

Level IV

Dancers will learn classical ballet technique in the traditional class format while learning how to apply this technique in all types of dance. Focuses will include proper alignment, turn out, increasing flexibility, developing a proper pointe, muscle control, positions of feet and arms, balance, ballet vocabulary and French terminology. With each level, classes will move at a faster pace with more content added to their repertoire than the level prior. Dancers are encouraged to be enrolled in at least one other dance class as well to broaden the knowledge of dance technique.

Prepointe is an important element to working toward Pointe. Students will develop technique and work toward goals that will continue their technique within the world of ballet. Students are required and continue to work on have proper spine alignment, ankle strength, proper foot-pointing technique, ability to hold turn-out from the hips, a well-elevated releve on demi pointe with straight knees, and correct distribution of body weight both on two legs and on one leg. Prepointe will include exercises in demi pointe to strengthen calf muscles, ankles, and arches of the feet. Exercises will begin at the barre for safety and stability in this class to progress toward the goal of pointe in the future.

Non-Leveled Studio Classes

Students will learn basic dance positions and movements as well as play dance/movement games. Students will dance alongside a parent/adult and learn to move to the music. Some basic ballet/dance terminology will be taught, and dancers will get to use their imagination while dancing. Register for each date on site.

This specialized class is a great way to increase your flexibility, strength, and endurance, and enhance proper dance techniques. Strength and Flexibility focuses on the body’s center; the core is where all movements begin and end. Improving balance, flexibility, body alignment, and strength allows a dancer to perform at their full potential. All these building blocks add up to proper execution of the “tricks” of dance! Improve your dance technique in this power packed class! Dancers can expect to learn exercises to help them increase their flexibility and learn how to do the splits!

Teacher: Liz Watkins

Swing dance is a group of dances that developed with the swing style jazz music in the 1920’s – 1940’s. This class will focus on learning East Coast Swing throughout the semester. There will be lots of partner work, musicality, dips, and tricks! It will be a swingin’ good time!

Teacher: Hope Williams

This class will focus on learning choreography and dance for the theater! If you have ever wanted to know what a choreographer is looking for when planning dances for a show, this is a great class to learn!

Teacher: Amy Carson

Calling all adults! This open level class is for everyone no matter your experience. This class will focus on endurance, skill, core, and tap technique!

Teacher: Harrison Berggren

A fun way of learning choreography, line dancing offers growth for all dancers. Dancers will build memory and retention, music knowledge, individual styling, and coordination among other skills. Combinations will be taught to music of diverse and popular genres including Pop, Modern, Country, Latin, and Hip Hop. Dancers can expect to improve quick memorization and be able to dance a wide range of line dances, applicable to tons of situations!

Teacher: Carlye Stone

This fun, energetic class is here to teach you the basic movements in Hip Hop. Through isolations, dancers will learn how to control their bodies to the fast paced moves that are required in this form of dancing. With these basics, we will dance through basic sequences. Come learn how to dance to all your favorite upbeat songs!

Prerequisites Recommended

(At least one year in a jazz, contemporary, or ballet class)

Moving at a faster pace than most classes, this class will continue to encourage dancers to express emotion through a free-flowing, interpretive style similar to lyrical. Contemporary dance incorporates not only fundamental and essential ballet techniques but also dance and jazz technique as well. Students are encouraged to be enrolled in a ballet class while taking this class as well.

This intermediate to advanced level class will encourage dancers to express emotion through a free-flowing, interpretive style. Jazz, ballet as well as modern technique will be important components in this class. Students will learn and practice the basics of Modern Dance as well as introduction to Improvisational Dance.

Teacher: Laura Behm

In this class we will work on warm ups that get our body flowing with the music, some progressions across the floor to work on technique and musicality together, a bit of improv to find that emotional expression, and finish with a combo we get to explore everything we worked on with!
