What started as a thesis on Greek and Roman mythology, John-Michael Tebelak became enamored with the joy and love found in the Gospels, mainly Matthew and Luke. However, after attending a grim Easter service complete with a police shakedown, Tebelak decided to turn his thesis into something more. He wrote the book and brought on his college buddy, Stephen Schwartz, to write the music. And so Godspell was born!
We humans LOVE our stories. We have loved it since we could first communicate. So it only makes sense that Christ’s main tool for teaching was through parables and storytelling. Each story has a lesson, and each parable has a point. He was able to give us a glimpse into the mind of God, a mind of Love. Love not only makes the world go round, but all the commandments of God can be summed up in two simple sentences: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and then love your neighbor as yourself. Imagine if the world followed Christ’s teaching in that.
Godspell is a fantastic musical that brings forward Christ’s teaching in a modern way without losing the heart of his message. I cannot begin to express how proud of this cast and crew I am. The amount of time and dedication that went into this by our students and parent crews is astounding. I would also like to thank the artistic team for sharing their God-given talents.
