Ten years ago, we were invited to First Act’s (CYT KC) fundraising gala by our friends Jennifer and Chris Harvey. While the organization wasn’t entirely new to us—we had seen a couple of shows to support their kids and always enjoyed the experience—but at this point, being a theatre parent wasn’t on our radar at all. But that one invitation? It changed everything for our family.
We had such a fun time meeting new people, bidding on items, playing games and sharing a meal. Our ears perked up when we heard firsthand from students about how theatre was making an impact. They were growing in confidence, character, and community. It was time for the paddle raise at the end of the event where they simply ask people to donate without getting anything in return. My husband raised his paddle proudly on a number that we did not discuss beforehand. Surprised, I elbowed him and said, “What are you doing?” He leaned over and whispered in my ear… “I think we will be involved with this for a long time.”
He had no idea how right he was about to be.
From a parent of a kid who’s performed in over 20 productions, a show volunteer, to Ambassador of the Year, to a Board of Trustees member and finally this role as an Ambassador coordinator for Cocktails & Cabaret. We are here because a friend invited us to sit at her table.
No matter how many times I tell this story, and I tell it a lot, I can’t help but get emotional about this one night and how it changed everything.
