Before the 9 to 5 movie and musical we know and love, there was a movement that inspired both. 9to5 is an organization created in 1973 by clerical workers to respond to the inequities, unfairness, and outright harassment and discrimination they were experiencing in the workplace. These courageous, tenacious, and fierce women organized and banded together to advocate for themselves and for a better future for working women. 9to5 still exists today, fighting every day for equal wages, paid family leave, and a harassment-free workplace. Their work continues to advance racial and gender justice through community-led advocacy as they seek widespread, long-lasting change.
When we consider the history that led to 9 to 5 the Musical, the show goes from a lighthearted comedy to something quite a bit deeper. 9 to 5 isn’t just a musical—it’s a celebration of resilience, solidarity, and the power of women supporting each other.
Thank you to this phenomenal cast who have learned this entire show in only FIVE DAYS! It’s an enormous undertaking, and they all approached it with such care, attention, and detail. More importantly, they supported each other, encouraged each other, and made life-long memories and friendships along the way. Thank you to the fabulous parent committees who went above and beyond to create our set, costumes, props and more. We simply couldn’t do this without them, it’s true!
