Urinetown Director's Letter

Welcome to Urinetown—a musical that’s as bold, bizarre, and bitingly funny today as it was when it first hit the stage. On the surface, it’s a satirical comedy about a dystopian city where a water shortage has led to a ban on private toilets. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that Urinetown is a razor-sharp commentary on power, privilege, capitalism, and the cost of revolution.

Urinetown Artistic Team

What makes Urinetown so compelling—and so fun—is that it refuses to take itself too seriously while tackling very serious issues. It’s a show that constantly winks at the audience, reminding us that we are watching a musical, complete with toe-tapping numbers, romantic subplots, and over-the-top melodrama. But it also challenges us to think about our systems, our leaders, and even our own roles in society.

Ultimately, Urinetown is a celebration of theater’s power to provoke, entertain, and unsettle—all at the same time. We’ve embraced the absurdity, leaned into the irony, and, above all, tried to honor the spirit of a show that dares to ask: What if the world really did run out of something as simple—and essential—as a place to pee?

Thank you to the cast and crew for their incredible work to bring this production to life! Andrew would like to thank his beautiful wife, Jana, and amazing son, Arlo, for their love and support. Now sit back, relax, hold your pee, and enjoy Urinetown!

What's Happening at First Act?

Seussical Director’s Letter

Dr. Seuss stories have been delighting us since 1937 with their catchy rhyme schemes and unique illustrations. I know I have memories of my parents reading Dr. Seuss books to me over and over again because I couldn’t get enough! And all the while, underneath the surface, there were deeper lessons to be learned from these stories.

Announcing Our 27th Season: Journey On!

As we embark on our 27th season, we are ready to take a journey with you! Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Wherever we go, whether it's under the sea with Nemo, the kingdom of Duloc with Shrek, or way down under the ground with Orpheus, God is always with us lighting the way.

Why Cocktails & Cabaret?

Every year we host Cocktails & Cabaret, the gala fundraiser that helps us raise critical funds to support First Act Theatre Arts and its mission. Without this fundraiser, First Act wouldn’t exist! These funds help us bridge the gap between rising expenses and our revenue. This year’s event will be June 6th at Fiorella’s Kansas City and will feature performances from First Act’s Dance Company, MT Troupe, and the Class of 2026. We will also award the first alum receipient of the Gina Milbourn Find Your Light Alumni Award! Read more below about the importance of this event and find out how you can get involved!
