We’re less than a month away from our two Spring Productions, Frozen Jr. and Newsies! While our cast members have been working hard at rehearsals to learn their scenes and songs, their parents have been working just as hard behind the scenes! Our incredible parent committees spend hours bringing these incredible stories to life with their time and talents. Learn just a little bit about three of our parent committees and how they are integral to our shows below:
Costumes are what our students wear onstage to bring their characters to life. Oftentimes, students will have multiple costumes in one show because they play different characters throughout the show. Our costume committee parents start by taking measurements of students to match them with their costumes. They pull costume pieces from our massive costume warehouse, or create brand new pieces using their incredible sewing skills. Then, about a month before the show, we host a Costume Parade where all of the students get to try on their costumes and present them to the directing team. Then, after some minor adjustments, they’ll wear them onstage in the show! Whether it’s hemming pants, fixing a zipper, or creating a dress that Elsa can magically change into a new one, our costume committees bring magic to life!
Set pieces create the environment that scenes take place in onstage. This can range from a hanging fabric backdrop to a table and chairs to a massive ice palace. Our set committee parents start by meeting with the director to understand their vision for the show. Then, they go from there, creating the necessary pieces for each show in our wood shop. From basic construction to artistic painting, creativity is at an all time high on this committee. Once all the pieces are built, the set committee transports them to the theater where they assemble all of them onstage. Some pieces will roll on and off while others will remain stationary throughout the show. Their top priority is to keep all the students safe onstage while creating realistic and eye-catching pieces!
From old age makeup to wigs, specialty hair and makeup helps bring the finishing touches to a production. After meeting with the directors to see what their vision is, our hair and makeup committees work to source wigs for characters who need them. Oftentimes, Disney characters have iconic hairdos that are hard to replicate without wigs. That’s why our Annas and Elsas in Frozen Jr. will all have wigs on! Other times, hair and makeup will apply moustaches, beards, and even old age makeup! As everything comes together on stage, these final pieces help to complete the picture alongside amazing costumes.
